On "Roots," Sepultura worked with several famous guest musicians. Brazilian percussionist Carlinhos Brown, House Of Pain's DJ Lethal, Korn's Jonathan Davis, and Faith No More's Mike Patton all made appearances.
"Septultra has always been since '87 putting people into the records. This time, my intention was to get more twisted," says Max. "Nobody's more twisted than Mike Patton! He's great, a fucking pure genius. He's really easy to work with. "
Sepultura wrote a special song for Patton, one that Max describes as "early Black Sabbath meets tribal Brazilian jungle." Unfortunately, that track proved too long for the album (though it should see the light of day as a b-side). Patton does show up the "Roots," however, alongside Davis and DJ Lethal on a song called "Lookaway."
"For me it's one of the most intense and wild songs we ever wrote," says Max. "It has three different singers, scratching, and everything going on at the same time!"
